Local artist DanLeo has unveiled his latest creation in Kilkenny –an enormous, beautifully-painted reindeer at the entrance to Mac Donagh Junction – just in time for Christmas.

Kilkenny’s Christmas festival, ‘Yulefest’, is in full swing, and it has delighted kids of all ages with events and activities across city and county. But a creative twist has also been in evidence, with features like the Yulefest Toy Soldier project and the 3D light installations at Butler Garden.

Now Dan’s colourful, visually-striking reindeer has been added to the mix. He was invited to create the piece and did so in his distinctive style rich of pattern elements and bold colours reflecting a background of cartoons, music and street art. His work often depicts nature and animals.

The artist himself captured this image of his daughter examining the piece, and its impressive scale. Dan captures the essence of the animals he paints in the simplest way he can, and focuses on the most essential features.

The piece was commissioned by Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Public Participation Network. The vision of Director Mary Mulholland and the Kilkenny Arts Office also deserve credit for its inclusion in Yulefest.
