A rare "Bonzo Bank" mechanical toy  has been sold at auction in Kilkenny for €8,500. Made by Saalheimer & Strauss Germany in the 1920s or 1930s, it went under the gavel at Mealy's Fine Arts in Castlecomer last week where bidding was brisk.

The toy is stamped Germany, with a company logo 'SS' in a circle. The front is inscribed with directions of use (in the form of a poem), with lever and dog's mask under an arched top.

The sides of the bank feature geometric designs while the under side has a trap door. It is seven inches tall.
