Discovery of skeleton in Inistioge halts pipe laying

Plastic sheeting covers the skeleton found in Inistioge

The discovery of a skeleton has stopped pipe laying works in the middle of Inistioge.

Cllr Michael Doyle said Irish Water had closed the site located near the Everyday convenience store pending the arrival of an archaeologist.

The remains may form part of the old Augustinian abbey across the road behind the Catholic Church in the village.

Cllr Doyle recalls a tunnel from the church grounds going down under the road, leading to a burial chamber which may give a clue as to the identity of the skeleton discovered in the village.
