Gardaí in Kilkenny are investigating a number of incidents of harassment on social media sites.
One of the incidents relates to an allegation of harassment on the social media site, Facebook. The reported harassment is believed to be abusive and of a sexual nature and gardaí are treating the matter very seriously. The contents of the messages are lewd and disturbing in nature.
An investigating garda told The Kilkenny People that a number of females have contacted them and have lodged complaints that they have been the victim of similar harassment.
“If anyone has suffered harassment or any other criminal activity on a social media site we are asking them to report it to us. Many people are not aware that any threats or harassment made on social media sites constitute criminal offences,” added the senior garda spokesman.
Investigations into the online harrassment are continuing and anyone with any information is asked to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on (056) 7775000.
Meanwhile gardaí are also warning people to exercise caution when sharing personal data on social media sites. Opportunist criminals trawl through sites seeking information that will enable them to plan crimes.
“We are warning householders not to post on social media sites letting criminals know when they are out of their homes are on going away on holidays,” added the spokesperson.
