The restriction was put in place in early February for infants under six months of age due to excessive nitrate levels in the water supply
Irish Water has confirmed that the drinking water restriction which has been in place for the Ballyragget Water Supply Scheme in recent months has now been lifted with immediate effect, following the installation of a new nitrates treatment system.
The restriction was put in place in early February for infants under six months of age due to excessive nitrate levels in the water supply.
This restriction has this morning been lifted in consultation with the HSE, following the installation of the nitrates treatment system at the water treatment plant, and the satisfactory completion of a period of monitoring of the new system. Water from the Ballyragget Water Supply is now suitable for consumption by all customers, including babies under six months of age.

The treatment system which has been installed includes a number of alarms and monitors to detect exceedances in nitrate levels in the raw water and prevent them entering the public drinking water supply. This will provide effective protection against elevated nitrate levels now and into the future.

"We are also grateful to Kilkenny County Council, our contractors, suppliers and all the other agencies who worked with us on this extensive upgrade of the treatment plant and to provide alternative supplies of water while the restriction was in place," said a statement.
Should customers have any concerns or queries about their water supply, they should contact Irish Water’s 24/7 customer care line at 1850 278 278.
