French classes with the Alliance Française in Kilkenny

Learning french helps to stave off the effects of mental deterioration

French lessons with Alliance Française in Kilkenny

The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

September marks a return to class for teachers and for students and a time for all of us to plan what activities you want to begin or restart for the Autumn and Winter.
You are possibly planning for losing weight, getting fit, quitting smoking or spending less time online.
But perhaps your plans also include learning (or improving) a foreign language.
If that language is French then the place to learn is in the Alliance Française of Kilkenny, part of the worldwide Alliance Française Foundation established to promote language learning and cultural activities. Based in the Club House Hotel, Patrick Street, Kilkenny, classes are offered to adults of all abilities with both evening and daytime options.
Les Actualitiés
These include beginners; Improve Your French, and for the advanced a class to discuss current affairs (les Actualitiés) and literature in French Book Club.
There are special classes dedicated to Leaving Cert students geared at the oral and aural exams.
For those who are free there is the no-frills weekly Coin Francais in the Club House Hotel bar each Thursday morning. Evening Cultural events are held each month also.
But why should you learn or keep up French?
There are many reasons from career-based ones,
French speakers are in huge demand in the software support and sales area.
This is particularly true for sales to central and western Africa where French is widely spoken).
You may have personal reasons to take up french at your preferred level, like holidays and culture.
staving off the effects of mental deterioration
Let us not forget the recent scientific research has shown that keeping the brain active by the practice of focus on language processing is a huge help in staving off the effects of mental deterioration and even Alzheimer’s.
Yes there are apps for you to download to your smart device, but language is all about communicating with people, and we humbly suggest you need less time in front of a screen and more time in the company of people building your language skills.
So along with getting your body fit you should also keep your brain fit and increase your social communication and connections. You can even do all together by walking or cycling to the Club House Hotel for the French classes!
Enrolment with more information and a chance to meet the teachers is in the Club House Hotel on Tuesday 4th September from 7 to 9pm. Further details can be got from www.afkilkenny.org , or email info@afkilkenny.org or Mary at 086-1690565.
