Launching Heritage Week: Cathaoirleach Eamon Aylward; Bernadette Roberts, Heritage Office; Cllr Malcolm Noonan, Chair Kilkenny Heritage Forum; Dearbhala Ledwidge, Heritage Officer; Mayor Peter Cleere
Heritage Week provides some opportunities to discover and explore the wonders of Kilkenny’s natural and built heritage.
The theme of Heritage Week this year is ‘Share a Story, Make a Connection’ —and a number of water-themed events will take place as part of this. Rivers and Natural Waterbodies connect communities in many ways, and to celebrate Water Heritage Day, a family event will take place in Castlecomer Discovery Park this Friday, August 24.
Education Tutor Ann-Marie, who has a degree in wildlife biology, will facilitate a guided river biodiversity workshop. Children will become water scientists as they explore the invertebrate life in the stream to try to determine water quality.
The event will be suitable for families with children aged 5-10 years and will last around 60-90 minutes. Children must be accompanied by an adult/parent.
For safe ratios with water, a maximum of 20 children on this session (with their adult guardians) will be able to be accommodated. Wellies/old shoes are required as the group will be standing in the water as part of the session.

There will also be a fascinating event in Graignamanagh hosted by Eanna Ni Lamhna of RTE and Mooney goes Wild Fame.
‘Walking with Eanna discovering the wildlife of the River Barrow’ begins at 3pm on Friday, August 24 at ‘Outdoor Activities Hub’, The Dock, Graignamanagh (pitch n putt area).
No plant, tree, bird or flying insect will escape her detection and the participants will be regaled with stories of their life and times.
Finally, Thomastown community network will host a ‘Walk and Talk’ of the natural and built heritage of the River Nore on Sunday, August 26 at 1pm. Enjoy stories of Grennan Mill and the Railway Viaduct.
The event is supported by Heritage Council and Waters and Communities Office.
