A new brochure documenting more than 20 local attractions and guiding visitors around the village of Inistioge in a very innovative and creative way was launched on Thursday evening.
The brochure gives visitors a perspective of the village through the eyes of four of its former inhabitants. One such inhabitant is an Augustinian Monk – who would have lived in the Priory in Inistioge in the 1500’s who gives an outline of his day as he prepares for the Feast Day of St. Columcille.
Other featured characters include Lady Louise Tighe – she describes a typical day as she walks from her home in Woodstock to visit the local school as they prepare for Christmas and Eileen and Eddie Keher who describe what it was like to grow up on the Square in Inistioge in the 1950’s.
The text for the brochure was written by Carmel Cummins, a local poet, writer, member of Inistioge Tidy Towns and a resident on the Square and the graphic design, illustration and creativity was by Alé Mercado who also lives locally.
John Kirwan, local historian and genealogist, provided advice on historical data and gave a talk at Thursday’s launch.
Kilkenny County Council Heritage Officer, Dearbhela Ledwidge provided guidance, support and co-funding.
Local man Eddie Cody provided a lot of valuable information that helped to tell the story portrayed in the brochure and the Tidy Towns Committee under the Chair of Margaret Jernigan also helped to bring the project to fruition.
The brochure was officially launched by Cllr. Andrew McGuinness, Leas Caitherleach of Kilkenny County Council.
“I was highly impressed with the creativity, imagination and sheer love and pride for Inistioge that is evident throughout its pages. It’s a credit to the village and all involved in the project,” said Andrew.
“It will be a resource that people will use for many years. Inistioge Tidy Towns have set the standard very high for other community groups who are developing heritage trails and this is a prime example of community spirit at its very best,” he concluded.
