A capacity crowd flocked to St Lachtain’s Church of Ireland, Freshford on Friday for the launch of the Ned Kennedy’s book “Frigger’s Alley”.
This event was part of the Kilkenny Heritage week programme in association with Acorn Club Freshford.
Frigger’s Alley is a collection of stories, local poems and topical songs from the Freshford pantomimes with a tale or two from the surrounding districts compiled by Freshford’s own Ned Kennedy.
Ned, who was a teacher at St Lachtain’s National School, is a greatly respected local historian who is playing a significant role in the documentation and preservation of the local history of Freshford.
It was an emotional journey for the crowd as many memories and emotions of events, people and places were rekindled.
From Gerry O’Reilly’s opening address, Ned’s presentation on the History of Local Entertainment 1847-2017, Larry Hamilton officially launched the book. He gave a moving speech on the undocumented heroism and quiet, yet essential, contribution of ordinary people, community and storytelling. The evening continued with songs performed by the Male Chorus from the old pantomimes, with all enjoying the festivities right through to the book signing.
“Frigger's Alley” is a book on Freshford history, culture and heritage. A wealth of stories, characters, memories, emotions and respect for Freshford’s rich heritage jumps out from the 220 pages.
