The daughter of two Kilkenny people who moved Stateside in the late 1940s has made a welcome return to visit.

Ellen Hennessy’s father Patrick Hennessy was a regular contributor to the Kilkenny People newspaper and read it weekly in a bid to stay in touch with goings-on at home. He was married to Eileen nee Grace, a sister of the late GAA County Secretary Paddy Grace.

The pair moved to Chicago in 1949 where Pat worked in the Mayor’s office while also writing and being a strong force in the GAA scene there. The duo also worked towards the Canonisation of Blessed Edmond Rice.

Now both deceased, their daughter Ellen has made the trip to Kilkenny where cousins turned out on Saturday night to greet her at a special gathering at the Orchard House.
