The people of Kilkenny are encouraging people and businesses to reuse everyday as part of National Reuse Month.
Kilkenny County Council’s goal for October is to make people and businesses aware of how they already reuse while encouraging them to go that little bit further. The Environment Section of Kilkenny County Council is encouraging people and businesses to reuse everyday – at home, at work and at play. Irish households reuse less than 5% of the amount of waste discarded every year and it was with this statistic in mind that National Reuse Month was introduced in 2016. Small changes in our everyday lives have a significant impact on the environment. As part of National Reuse Month Kilkenny County Council is asking people to value what they already own by using it and reusing it for as long as possible. This in turn impacts on the need to manufacture and distribute which reduces waste and therefore cuts down on greenhouse emissions.
Commenting on National Reuse Month, Mary Cashin, Acting Environmental Awareness Officer with Kilkenny County Council said “”People already incorporate reuse in their daily lives such as repairing electrical products or borrowing a book for a local library. Incorporating swapping, sharing, borrowing, refilling, repairing and purchasing second hand in our daily lives are all types of reuse which will benefit our environment and our own personal finances.
"The Repair Directory, an initiative of Kilkenny County Council, has been further developed and can now be accessed on www.repairmystuff.ie. The directory compliments National Reuse Month perfectly as it allows people to look up professionals in their area who can repair, remake and reimagine all types of everyday items. The directory also affords an opportunity for businesses to advertise their services for free.”
