Crime in Urlingford is ‘very low’ with only two residential burglaries so far this year compared to 15 last year and in Kilkenny the number of burglaries have dropped from 401 in 2014 to 161 last year. The figures were revealed at a Joint Policing Committee meeting in Urlingford last week, Cllr David Fitzgerald (Fine Gael) commended Chief Superintendent Dominic Hayes on his ‘style of policing’.
“I would like to acknowledge Dominic Hayes and his style of policing in relation to high profile operations like Storm. It is great to see a chief out and about and meeting the people and not stuck behind a desk,” he added.
Superintendent Derek Hughes told the meeting that what drves crime down is checkpoints and visibility.
“Urlingford is an area within the area of the subdistrict and the rate of crime here is very low.
“This is achieved through vigilance. Urlingford is a very safe place and we want to keep it that way. ,” the superintendent said.
Cllr Mary Hilda Kavanagh (Fine Gael) was reassured by the comments.
“People should feel safe and the statistics are encouraging. People have been good at reporting suspicious activity,” she added.
Deputy John McGuinness commended this ‘new method of policing’.
“The local community should be comforted that this type of policing works.”
