Michael D sweeping ahead in Carlow Kilkenny - Second count may not be needed

The sorting of votes in the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency for the presidential election has begun in the count centre at Cillin Hill, Kilkenny.

With many of the Carlow boxes opened, Michael D Higgins has taken a commanding lead with Peter Casey doing even better than predicted in the polls.

He is getting a lot of Michael D's number twos and vica versa.

At this stage the result is a foregone conclusion with the only issue to be decided whether or not there will be a second count needed to elect Michael D.

The turnout is expected to be less than 40%.
