84-year gentleman targeted by opportunist criminal in Kilkenny City

Gardaí in Kilkenny are investigating a scam whereby an opportunist criminal stole a car from a city centre carpark after distracting its owner.

An 84-year-old man was returning to his car with his shopping at the Market Yard at 9.50pm on Saturday night when he was approached by a lone man who offered him help with his groceries which was declined.

The man opened the boot of the car and proceeded to put his shopping in the car before returning the trolley to a nearby bay. When he returned the car was stolen and he realised that he had inadvertently left the key in the boot.

The car was subsequently recovered on Monday evening at The Square in Castlecomer. The vehicle was seized for examination and it was discovered that the groceries had been stolen from the car.

CCTV footage from the Market Yard is being examined. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Kilkenny gardaí on (056) 7775000.
