Cathedral choirs will sing some beautiful choral pieces as they move around the various parts of the medieval building
St Canice’s Cathedral will be lit completely by candlelight for the ever-popular Civic Service of Lessons and Carols this Sunday,December 16 at 5pm.
The Cathedral choirs will sing some beautiful choral pieces as they move around the various parts of the medieval building, with plenty of opportunity for the congregation to sing some of their favourite carols. During the liturgy, the cathedral will move from near darkness as over 1,000 candles will be lit, illuminating the various parts of the building.
“For most of the 800-plus years of its history, St Canice’s was lit by no other means than by candlelight,” says the Dean, the Very Rev’d David MacDonnell.
“Our ancient chapter records record huge amounts of candles being purchased for the celebration of great Christian festivals.
“Hidden in the shadows of candles burning brightly, we evoke the mystery of God coming among us as the light of the world and prepare our hearts and minds to receive Him.”
All are warmly invited to attend the service on Sunday. The proceeds of the collection will go to local charities.
