Marley who was surrendered to an animal rescue
212 forever homes have been found in 2018 through Petmania Kilkenny’s partner adoption centre, Protecting Pound Dogs. Petmania believe that all pets deserve a secure, safe and caring home. They provide support, treatments and gifts through their aftercare service to rescue pet owners to help them settle into their forever home.
Christmas time sees an increase in the adopting and purchasing of pets with many people choosing a cute cat or dog as a gift. With the usual message being adopt don’t shop, Petmania have taken it a step further and are asking people to stop and think before committing to a pet this festive season along with considering the alternative option of fostering a pet during the holidays.
Fostering a dog during Christmas provides a great amount of relief for rescue centres.
Emily Miller, Marketing Manager with Petmania says, “We urge people to steer away from last minute decisions when adopting or buying pets. Rescue centres nationwide do need temporary housing for pets during Christmas/ Fostering is an option that many people do not think about and it is a great way for people to discover if a dog fits their lifestyle.”
Rescue pet owners become a part of the Petmania adoptive family network receiving support and special offers to make the process as enjoyable as possible. Petmania run in-store adoption days to provide information for people before they make the big move to rescue a pet. Petmania Kilkenny will hold an instore adoption day with Protecting Pound Dogs in their store on Saturday 15th December.
Through Petmania’s work with Protecting Pound Dogs in Kilkenny, they have seen the ongoing trend of impulse decision making and a lack of full consideration of the many demands a pet can bring.
Petmania ask potential pet owners to consider:
Christmas plans, will they be travelling to visit family and friends or going on day-trips, if so, how does the new furry member of the family fit into these plans.
Holidays planned for the coming year, is there a family member or friend who will look after the pet when the owner goes away.
The expense that a pet brings with food, maintenance and veterinary costs.
In relation to dogs, the extra time needed to walk them daily.
Efficient outdoor space and a sheltered area for the pet to sleep along with the extra task of cleaning up after the pet.
Petmania will continue to work closely with Protecting Pound Dogs in Kilkenny and other partner animal rescue centres across Ireland during 2019 and they are looking forward to extending the adoption programme even further in the new year.
