File picture: Kilkenny will see a new drone take to the skies as part of a campaign to combat illegal dumping
Kilkenny County Council has bolstered its armoury for the War on Illegal Dumping, with the purchase of an aerial drone.
It’s part of measures to combat illegal waste disposal, unveiled alongside new Waste Management bylaws approved by local councillors this week, effective from January 17 next year. Under the bylaws, the council will now have the power to knock on doors and ask householders to prove how they are disposing of household waste.
Councillors praised the work of David Gallagher and his team in the council’s environment enforcement section, while director of services Sean McKeown said both fixed and mobile CCTV to catch offenders.
“We’ve recently purchased a drone which will assist in our activities. Staff need to be trained in relation to that,” he said.
The first few weeks of the bylaws, he said will be critical in making people aware of there existence, and this will be followed by enforcement.
