Trad stars Edel Fox and Neil Byrnes play in Kilkenny this month
Saturday, January 26 in The Clubhouse Hotel are a date and venue to remember for traditional music lovers.
The 12th annual concert run by the Kilkenny Uilleann Pipers Club sees a mix of the best local and national traditional musicians take to the stage.
Presenter of RTE’s Rolling Wave programme, Peter Browne is one of Ireland’s finest uilleann pipers, he has played with The Bothy Band, Paul Brady, Mary Black, The Dubliners, Maura O’Connell and the RTE Concert Orchestra.
In 2004, Edel Fox was awarded one of the highest honours for a traditional musician in Ireland – the TG4 Young Musician of the Year award. She is a regular performer on Irish National Radio and the BBC.
In 2015 Edel partnered with renowned Waterford fiddle player Neill Byrnes to release their first CD ‘The Sunny Banks’. The two will be joined by legendary Cork born Fiddle player John Dwyer. A measure of the esteem in which John is held is that for the last four years Waterford has hosted the John Dwyer Trad Weekend, the only traditional music festival in Ireland named after a living musician.
Kilkenny musicians: Tommy Lanigan (bodhrán and vocals) and Paddy Cleere banjo and bazouki will play along with Colm O’Cuiv (guitar and vocals) and local piping legends John Touhey and Mick Foley.
Rounding up the line-up will be local band ‘Reel to Reel’ who play a mix of traditional and contemporary music.
Two of the original line-up, Dave Prim (RIP) and Michael ‘Mog’ O’Grady are no longer with the band while Martin Coughlan, Billy Carrigan, Billy Barron, James Rice, Adrian Jackson, Frank O’Brien and Frank Salmon will take to the stage.
The concert is on in the Clubhouse Hotel on Saturday January 26 at 9pm. Tickets at €15 at The Clubhouse Hotel, all proceeds go to Kilkenny Uilleann Pipers Club.
