A Kilkenny youngster has won a top prize in a national science competition,

The annual ReelLife Science Awards was held in University of Galway recently and one of winners in
the national science video competition was Maya Coffey representing Johnswell Youth Club.

The even took place on Sunday November 13 as part of Science Week 2022 and the 25th Galway
Science and Technology Festival.

More than 400 short science films were entered into the competition by 3,000 young science enthusiasts representing 140 schools and youth groups across the island of Ireland.

From a large number of entries, Maya’s video was one of three entries shortlisted in the youth group category, and unbelievably Maya was deemed the overall national winner beating off competition from young people in youth groups in Galway and Mayo. Eight counties, Leitrim, Cork, Kilkenny, Dublin, Mayo, Roscommon, Limerick and Galway were represented in the national prize winners with Maya putting Johnswell Youth Club and Kilkenny on the map.

Maya’s video entry was entitled Haemo’s Tour of the Heart and uses animation to take viewers on a
tour of the human heart. The video can be viewed on YouTube under ReelLife Science winners 2022.

Maya is aged 11 years and a member of Johnswell youth club which has been serving the young
people of Johnswell areas for many years. It is one of a network of youth clubs around the county
affiliated to Ossory Youth with volunteer leaders on hand every Friday night to open the doors to
young people.
