All eyes will turn to Gowran Park, next week as it plays host to one of Ireland’s most prestigious and eagerly awaited racing events: the Goffs Thyestes Chase.

The race has a deserved reputation as a truly thrilling spectacle, drawing thousands to experience the excitement and drama of top-tier National Hunt racing, right here in Kilkenny. The Goffs Thyestes Chase, a Grade A handicap steeplechase, is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of the best in Irish horse racing.

With a purse worth over €100,000 and a field packed with contenders, the event promises to deliver high-stakes action and a great day out all round. As always, from early on, the atmosphere at Gowran Park will be electric, as trainers, jockeys, and owners all aim to claim victory in what has become a marquee event on the National Hunt calendar.

Henry De Bromhead-trained Ain’t That A Shame ran out the winner of the main event last year; the 14/1 chance ridden by Rachael Blackmore was a firm favourite with the home crowd. I unfortunately didn’t have her backed, but made up for it with a bit of luck in the bumper, before availing of the courtesy shuttles back into Kilkenny City.

At this stage, the list of Chase winners is a who’s who of Irish jump racing stars, from Arkle to Hedgehunter, from Flying Bolt to Djakadam — but my abiding memory of the Thyestes Chase was the big upset of 2013. It was my first taste of the big day out in Gowran, and it lived long in the memory.

The weather was perfect, and a huge crowd had come in to roar on some home favourites. A combination of sheer luck and a little research the week before meant I had the backed 25/1 Jadanli - he romped home against all expectation, defying more experienced punters and those supposedly in the know. He held off Tarquinius down the final stretch to win by a head. Winnings pocketed, the celebration dinner later that night was truly mighty.
