Kilkenny County Council have announced the appointment of Ormonde Construction Ltd as contractors for the construction of 88 social housing units and a community centre at Crokershill, Kennyswell Road, Kilkenny City.
The ex-VAT contract value is €26.8 million.
The development is funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under the Housing for All Programme.
It has recently started on site and is scheduled for completion in late 2024. Contracts were formally signed on February 15, 2023.
Welcoming the commencement of the project, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick said he is delighted to see this development going on site.
"It is a very positive start to the new year and it is great to see Kilkenny County Council’s Housing Construction Programme continuing to progress at pace," he said.
"I am particularly delighted to see so many badly needed wheelchair liveable and age friendly units within the scheme."
The housing scheme, located on the Kennyswell Road in Kilkenny City is comprised of a mix of unit types, houses and apartments, 1 bed to 4 bed, with 19 of the units being fully wheelchair liveable.
The unit types and sizes were designed in accordance with the need in the city to ensure that development becomes a sustainable, inclusive community on a well-located site within walking distance of all amenities in Kilkenny City.
Provision has been made for a community centre within the scheme also, it is intended to be used by the new residents and the wider community.
Speaking at the contract signing today, John Holohan of Ormonde Construction said the company are delighted to be awarded this significant contract for Kilkenny City and are looking forward to working with Kilkenny County Council and the Design Team towards a successful completion.
The project is being managed by the Housing Capital Section of Kilkenny County Council.
The Design Team comprises Van Dijk Architect Ltd, Hayes Higgins Partnership (Civil & Structural Engineers & Mechanical & Electrical Engineers), and McGahon Surveyors (Quantity Surveyors).
Sean McKeown, Acting Chief Executive of Kilkenny County Council, on signing the Contract said that it is the most significant housing development that Kilkenny County Council have undertaken in many years.
The Council are grateful for the support of the Department of Housing in providing the funding for this Scheme under the Housing for All Programme.”
Kilkenny County Council, in partnership with Approved Housing Bodies, expect to deliver 360 housing units in 2023 and 2024.
