The Argos branch on High Street in Kilkenny City is now closed
High Street suffered a setback this week, as two major business premises in Kilkenny City centre close their doors.
However, the unique ‘vibrancy and business buzz’ of the city will be maintained by the businesses that remain committed to the city, says Kilkenny Chamber.
Joining the list of empty business premises this week is the Argos store, which closed for the final time on Saturday, and soon the Ulster Bank’s High Street branch, scheduled to end services on March 31, and close at the end of April — two more unoccupied, prime locations in the heart of the city’s shopping and business district.
“Kilkenny cannot afford to be complacent, and that is why the Chamber continues to lobby government on behalf of local businesses, particularly on such important issues as supports,” said the President of Kilkenny Chamber, Brian Keyes, who pointed out the phenomenon of vacant city centre premises can be seen right across Europe.
“Kilkenny has retained its unique vibrancy and business buzz,” Mr Keyes added and, despite the recent closures “initial tentative reports showing a return to 2019 levels of business for the sector locally.”
He went on to say “there have been some very strong wins for Kilkenny in recent times — Abbott’s arrival with 800 jobs, Azteca recently with up to 150 jobs when finished and the ongoing development particularly in an expanding Fintech sector. Right in the heart of the city, the Abbey Quarter is preparing for its next phase of development, and generating considerable international interest.”
The decision to close the Kilkenny Argos branch, and all Argos stores across the Republic of Ireland, has been influenced by changing consumer habits and the growth of online shopping.
Ulster Bank will cease all transactions on March 31, with staff helping any remaining customers close their accounts until the permanent branch closure on April 21.
