New cycling infrastructure welcomed in Kilkenny

The provision of a new cycle track from the New Orchard Estate to the Pococke estates in Kilkenny City has been warmly welcomed by city councillor John Coonan.

“This new facility is a complete transformation and has really brought a new sense of purpose and accessibilty to the entire area,” he said.

“I’d like to welcome this environmentally friendly scheme and the possibility it provides, including perhaps a future connection for cyclists to the ring road, allowing more people to travel to work and commute across the city.

“I know many people in the area and have family there and it is a hugely welcome addition.”

The provision of the new cycling amenity was facilitated by Kilkenny County Council.

According to the local authority, the existing track in the area had become unusable primarily due to overgrown hedging.

That hedging was cleared during the recent hedge-cutting season and new cycling infrastructure was subsequently laid down.

A large quantity of litter found amongst the hedging was also removed.
