River jumpers wreak havoc on businesses in Kilkenny

River-based businesses in Kilkenny City recently had their operations ‘destroyed’ by youngsters jumping into the River Nore from atop John’s Bridge.
That’s according to local councillor Andrew McGuinness, who raised the issue at last Friday’s meeting of Kilkenny County Council.
In recent years, a number of new businesses have set up operations on the River Nore in Kilkenny offering services to tourists and locals alike.
Their ability to provide these services is threatened when people enter the water in locations that are not designated swimming areas.
Cllr McGuinness acknowledged that jumping from the local landmark is a regular occurrence, but asked if measures could be taken to prevent it.
The council says such activity is a matter for gardaí and that it will be raised with them.
Cllr McGuinness’ concerns extended to the health of those opting to jump in. He asked if the water quality at the bridge poses risks to health.
Officials said that the quality of water in the area is not monitored regularly as it is not a designated swimming area.
Cllr McGuinness then asked about the possibility of erecting signage in a bid to discourage the activity.
Director of Services, Tim Butler, said that such a proposal could be looked into but he also questioned the probability of its efficiency.
