Independent councillor, Eugene McGuinness has voiced his concerns over poor driving conditions and continued cases of flooding on O’Loughlin Road in Kilkenny City.
Raising the issues at recent sittings of the Municipal District of Kilkenny City and updating followers via his social media platforms, Cllr McGuinness called for the wall at the O’Loughlin Road Bridge to be removed, due to safety concerns.
"It obscures the view of oncoming car/bus traffic from the Assumption Place side of the bridge," he said.
It has now been confirmed funding for an engineering examination has been secured for the locality with further details expected next year.
Cllr McGuinness welcomed the development, but said more was needed.
"I have also asked that a stop go system be put in place to make it safer for cars and pedestrians which will also eliminate the excess speeding issues reported in the same area," he said.
Meanwhile, the local councillor has also called for further support measures in the area following numerous cases of flooding on O’Loughlin Road.
The city street along with the Bleach Road were severley hit by high levels of rainfall in 2023, with the year producing the most rainfall on record since 2009.
Cllr McGuinness, who resides nearby, has 'vowed' to follow up the matter, stating: "Despite works been carried out on the gullies on both sides of the bridge in the last few months, it now appears that some of these gullies flow into a soak pit which is not ideal and will possibly need more substantial works than was first thought. I will continue to make representations."
