Important update on Kilkenny City's water supply issued by the EPA

Kilkenny TD and Minister for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan has welcomed confirmation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the Kilkenny City water supply at Troyswood is to be removed from their Remedial Action List following significant investment in upgrade works.

The Remedial Action List identifies water supplies which require further upgrades in order to ensure full compliance with drinking water standards now and into the future, and the removal of Kilkenny City from the 'at risk' list comes as Uisce Éireann confirmed that its €33 million upgrade of the Troyswood Water Treatment Plant has ensured a safe and reliable water supply for homes and businesses in the city and the surrounding area.

"Having campaigned for many years to improve our local water quality, and in particular to eliminate Trihalomethanes (THMs) in the water, I'm delighted that this very significant investment in Kilkenny’s water infrastructure will see the issue resolved," Minister Noonan said.

"We know that THMs – which occur when organic matter in raw water mixes with the chlorination process in treating water – are a threat to human health and the WHO has highlighted that some THMs are classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Kilkenny City and Inistioge were identified some years ago as having water supplies high in THMs and this has long been a matter of huge concern for me," he added.

"I met with Uisce Éireann and demanded that the matter be given highest priority. It has taken some time but thankfully now both supplies have been prioritised."

It has taken some time but thankfully now both supplies have been prioritised," the local TD commented, adding, "I’m relieved to see this come to pass after decades of campaigning to ensure the people in Kilkenny city and surrounding areas can enjoy the safe, clean drinking water."
