'It’s not a parking motion, it’s an access motion' - Kilkenny parking back under the spotlight

The Green Party’s Maria Dollard has called on the local authority to proceed with the provision of 'Hidden Disability' parking spaces for people with additional needs.

Cllr Dollard has asked that such spaces would be clearly marked with signage and used at the discretion of the public when needed by those with a sensory or hidden disability, such as Autism, learning disabilities or temporary mobility impairments for which a blue badge is not appropriate.

Speaking at this month’s sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District, Cllr Dollard commented: "It’s not a parking motion, it’s an access motion," noting it’s been three years since the motion was first passed at municipal district level.

The city councillor has also asked if the spaces could be located at a safe distance from the road and have the same dimensions to wheelchair parking spaces.

"For anyone who has had the experience of being a family carer, you will know how important it is to have access to a safe parking space where you can comfortably get to where you’re going," Cllr Dollard remarked.

"I don’t think it’s a huge amount to ask that we have a city that’s accessible for everybody."

Senior Engineer, Stan Cullen explained, the council are exploring locations to implement suitable parking.
