Special celebration for Canon at Kilkenny cathedral

A recent Choral Evensong at St Canice’s Cathedral, in Kilkenny, marked a special event for the congregation.

On Sunday, May 25, Reverend Canon Ian Coulter was installed as Canon Treasurer of Saint Canice’s Cathedral.

Following his appointment to the position by Bishop Adrian Wilkinson, last January, Revd. Canon Coulter was joined by family, friends and colleagues from across the diocese, as well as a large number of parishioners from the Templemore Union, for the occasion.

Prior to this role Canon Coulter had been the Prebendary of Blackrath on the Cathedral Chapter, since 2022.
Canon Coulter’s appointment follows the retirement of Canon Brian O’Rourke from the Chapter.

On the day, Canon Coulter was joined at the service by his family, wife Daphne and their children Rian and Ailbhe.

Welcoming worshippers to the cathedral for Evensong, the Dean, the Very Reverend Stephen Farrell, spoke of the historic role of a Canon Treasurer and welcomed Ian to this new position within the Chapter.

In his sermon to those gathered, Canon Coulter, who is also celebrating his ordination in St Canice’s Cathedral 25 years ago, said it was psalm 127, the psalm at the installation Evensong, that had gripped him all those years before and set him on the path to ordination.

He spoke of his joy at being installed into his new Office and how he looked forward to working with the Dean and Chapter Colleagues to continue the cathedral’s ministry of inclusion and welcome.

The Service was sung by the members of St. Canice’s Cathedral Choir.
Following Evensong fellowship continued over refreshments, generously provided by Canon Coulter’s family.
