ALERT: Major upgrade works on high profile Kilkenny City street may cause disruption

It's anticipated works can begin on the St Kieran's Street and Market Square Urban Enhancement Scheme along with the Refurbishment of the Northern Section of the Market Yard in September of this year.

Refurbishment and resurfacing of St Kieran's Street will include the decluttering of street furniture, signage and the enhancement of urban space at the intersection of St Mary’s Lane, The Butter Slip and St Kieran's Street.

Area Engineer with Kilkenny County Council, Stan Cullen said the local authority have been given the green light from the department to enter a contract with their preferred contractor following a tendering process last year.

"In advance of that I will be arranging meetings with traders on the street," Mr Cullen told city councillors.

"There will be implications from a road closures point of view which will impact deliveries so alternative arrangements need to be introduced," he commented, pledging to liaise with traders in order to reach a satisfactory arrangement during the works.

In response, Cllr David FitzGerald revealed he was 'delighted' but 'slightly concerned' the September start could mean works run into the Christmas period, negatively impacting local business.

The Fine Gael councillor also argued it was 'important' that the contractor meets with the businesses.
