A local councillor has slammed the CIE over the "unacceptable" condition of the original Kilkenny railway station buildings, which are currently owned by the public transport company.
Speaking at Friday’s sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District, Councillor David FitzGerald described the state of the structure as an ‘eye-sore’, arguing the public-transport company has continually been 'fobbing off' Kilkenny County Council when the local authority has sought answers.
Kilkenny Live understands the local authority has been liaising with CIE since 2018 on the matter with some works attempted.
"It was promised under the MacDonagh Junction redevelopment that there would be a significant refurbishment and redevelopment of the structure," Cllr FitzGerald told the meeting.

"The reality of it is, it has been entirely ignored and is in wrack and ruin at this stage. It is an eyesore within the city. We have a well deserved reputation for preservation of buildings and structures in the city and county but it is unacceptable that we have such an important structure, which was in reasonable condition up until the time of its closure, literally lying idle," he continued.
"The CIE have no interest from what I can see, in refurbishing it or finding a use for it, and if this were a private property owner or state agency, I have no doubt that the conservation officer and the local authority’s significant legislative book would be thrown at them," the Fine Gael councillor claimed.
"The CIE have been fobbing us off for years," said Cllr FitzGerald, stating, "it’s high time we stopped being nice about this, held CIE to account, and they stepped up and maintained their property the same way any other property owner has to," he asserted.
"It's about time here in Kilkenny we started shouting about this," he added, commenting, "I, as a public representative, am happy to take off the gloves and take on the CIE."
The motion was seconded by Cllr Sean Ó hArgain who described the site as an "embarrassment to the city."
