A decision on the future of Kilkenny's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) is now expected on Wednesday, July 29

A decision on the future of Kilkenny's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) has been deferred, with elected members now set to vote at a special meeting of Kilkenny County Council on Wednesday, July 29.

The proposal had been listed for discussion and decision at this week's monthly plenary meeting. However, councillors agreed to postpone the vote, with a dedicated workshop for elected members to take place in advance of the special meeting.

The deferral comes after weeks of intense public debate surrounding the ambitious transport strategy, which aims to reshape how people travel through Kilkenny City over the coming years.

The plan includes measures to encourage walking, cycling and public transport while reducing reliance on private cars.

It also outlines proposals for phased traffic management changes, including the trial pedestrianisation of High Street during festivals and events.

In recent weeks, the proposals have prompted strong reaction from sections of the business community.

Kilkenny Chamber hosted public information meetings with council officials before calling for an urgent meeting with councillors, arguing that businesses needed greater engagement before any decision was made.

Council officials have consistently maintained that the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is intended to create a more accessible, healthier and sustainable city while supporting future population and employment growth.

The special meeting that is to held on July 29 will determine whether the plan (in its current or possibly amended form) receives formal approval from elected members.
