Freshford victim named locally as Rita Apine - a woman 'never without a smile'

The late Rita Apine

The victim who died 'in suspicious circumstances' yesterday following an incident at her home in Freshford has been named locally as Rita Apine.

The 29-year-old Lativan had moved to the village in recent times and is remembered by her neighbours as a kind and bubbly woman who was devoted to her young daughter.

"You would always see the two of them together, they had a lovely relationship and she was a doting and caring Mum, she adored her little girl," one local remembered.

Cllr Andrew McGuinness remembered Rita 'a lovely person' and 'a fantastic mother' who was 'full of energy and positivity'.

"She was very happy living in Freshford. She would always have something nice to say and never without a smile.

"This is a heartbreaking story, particularly for her young daughter. My thoughts and prayers are with Rita's family and friends, and Alina who lost a loving mother."

A post mortem will take place later today. A full technical examination is taking place at her home on Bridge Street this morning.
