UPDATE: 52 arrests in Kilkenny during Operation Storm

Over €10,000 worth of drugs seized

52 people have been arrested in Kilkenny during Operation Storm and over €10,000 worth of drugs have been seized.

To date there have been 52 arrests, including 16 people arrested on warrant and there have been nine drugs seizures around the city and county. A firearm was also recovered during the search and a cannabis cultivation plant was also detected. A significant quantity of counterfeit €50 notes have also been seized during the high-profile, three-day operation.

14 people have been charged with a variety of offences including robbery, burglary and theft.

Superintendent Derek Hughes said that it was a 'large scale policing operation focusing on deterring criminal activity in the Kilkenny Garda District'.

"The operation involved over 120 gardaí on checkpoints, on the beat patrols, manning crime prevention stands and members involved in community engagement and in search and arrest duties.

"While it is possible that there is a perception that a larger scale operation indicates that there is a large level of crime the opposite is true and the figures show this ," added Supt Hughes.

"An operation such as this offers the public reassurance as to the scale and capacity of the policing response available in Kilkenny," he added.

Members of the Air Support Unit, The Dog Unit, The Mounted Unit and the Armed Response Unit were all involved in the operation.
