A water hen had a lucky escape in the River Nore last Thursday after being chased by a rat.
The scene was captured by Vicky Comerford of Vicky’s Photography, Kilkenny, who came across the tussle on one of her regular walks to the Fen at the river behind Newpark Hotel.
“I was taking a few photos and when I was packing up, I spotted this rat running with a piece of bread,” said Vicky.
One of the hens provoked the attack by attempting to take the bread, to which the rat grabbed the bird by the wing and chased it along the water. The hen escaped unharmed.
“It was scary because I was half thinking it would come for me next,” she said.
