Kilkenny Pool League proves to be a hit around the county

Kilkenny Pool League winners Paschal's Bar, Johnstown who defeated O’Gorman’s Pub, Kilkenny City in the County Final in Ballyragget recently.

The All-county Kilkenny Spring/Summer Pub pool League 2024, was held at various pubs and lounges around the county.

Eighteen pubs in total, the length and breadth of the county were represented in Kilkenny’s inaugural pub pool league.

The first set of fixtures began around mid-March and it was all concluded on a sunshine and drama-filled weekend of Pool.

The Shield Final was between McCarthy’s ‘B’ Johnstown and O’Gorman’s Pub, Kilkenny City, and was held in An Chearnog, Ballyragget.

It was a race to 11 frames.

It proved to be an absolute epic encounter.

With the match drawn at 10 frames apiece, a sudden death best of five session, came down to a one frame final decider.

The man who carried McCarthy’s over the line and won the frame was none-other than Tom Dunne, a former over 60s Irish International!

The main event was held in the Salmon Pool, Thomastown, between Paschal’s Bar, Johnstown, and An Chearnog, Ballyragget.

It was a thrilling and exciting final from first break to last pot!

The Bally boys were leading by nine frames to four, at one stage, but the Johnstown lads showed great character to come back and draw the match at nine frames all.

Pascals went on to win the last four out of five frames to complete a memorable victory.

Trophies and prize money were presented to both teams by Kilkenny Pool facilitator, Gerard Sheehy.

Prize money was also presented to the winning and runner-up pub proprietors.

The crowd then proceeded to sing a rousing version of ‘The Rose of Mooncoin” in honour of the occasion for the inaugural all county Kilkenny pub Pool league final 2024!

All credit goes to Gerard Sheehy, who was the facilitator and organiser of the whole event.

His dream of organising Kilkenny Pool started in 2020 but unfortunately lockdown hindered and cancelled his plans.

Gerard himself is a former Irish international player and his passion for pool is immense.

With dedicated people like him involved, it should be onwards and upwards for Kilkenny Pool.
