A bronze medal finish at the National Championships has earned Peter Lynch a place on the Irish team for the European Championships

Five members of the Kilkenny City Harriers club will be flying the flag for local athletics in Europe next month.

The group - athletes Aoibhe Richardson, Peter Lynch, Shay McEvoy, Hannah Kehoe and coach Niamh Richardson- are part of the Irish team that will represent the country at the European Cross-Country Championships in Turin.

Peter Lynch booked his place with a bronze medal finish in the senior men's race at the National Championships in Donegal at the weekend. Aoibhe Richardson was sixth in the senior women's race but has also been selected to run in Italy. She will be hoping to emulate her performance at the 2019 competition in Lisbon, Portugal, where she won team silver with Ireland. She was also selected for the 2021 championships, which were held in Dublin.

Shay McEvoy's performance at the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma, caught the attention of the team selectors. McEvoy, running for the University of Tulsa, was 23rd and earned his spot on the Irish under-23 team. Hannah Kehoe was fourth in the women's junior race in Donegal at the weekend but has also been called up for Ireland's women's under-20 team. She has had a stellar year, winning the national 1,500m and 3,000m track titles.

The inclusion of the quartet is the latest chapter in a good run for the Harriers. Five members of the club were selected for the 2019 Championships in Portugal - Aoibhe Richardson, Peter Lynch, Eoin Everard, Shay McEvoy and coach Niamh Richardson- while Aoibhe Richardson and Cathal O'Reilly were part of the Irish team in Santry in 2021, O'Reilly winning silver with the Irish junior men's team.

"We are absolutely delighted with the news," said Harriers PRO Nicholas Dunphy. "To have four athletes picked for the Irish team shows the hard work of our coaches is paying off through their performances."

The 28th edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships will be held at La Mandria Park, Turin on December 11.
