Kilkenny writers join forces for talk at Butler Gallery

Step Inside, a short film, will be screened in the Digital Gallery before the event
Two Kilkenny-based writers will speak about the relationship between creative writing and research in their work at a special event on Thursday (November 5) at the Butler Gallery.
Dr Alice Bennett and Nuala Roche are each writing a book that interweaves distinct authorial voices, Alice with fiction, and Nuala with creative non-fiction.
Alice reflects on her recent experience of writing a PhD using Evocative Autoethnography to explore adult educational practices. She talks about how painting, textiles, poetry, and film allowed her to explore and express knowledge that is not easily conveyed using more traditional research methodologies. This research writing has inspired her to explore her ideas further through a work of fiction in the genre of magic realism.

Nuala talks about work-in-progress The Dead on Street View, her creative non-fiction book that ‘looks slant’ at a family history, memory, technology, and storytelling. She reflects on her career in film editing and researching a family history as similar work: creating narrative cohesion from slices of time. Archival research and serendipitous discoveries have been a source of frustration and nourishment along the way.
Creative Writing in service to research and vicey-versey with Dr Alice Bennett and Nuala Roche is a free event and takes place from 6pm to 7pm and no booking is required here.
Meanwhile a short film about KCAT ( Kilkenny Collective for Arts Talent), made as part of Alice’s PhD by Freddie Greenall, will be shown in the Butler Gallery’s Digital Gallery before and after this event. It gives an evocative glimpse of the Open Studio Workshop space to complement the research on art pedagogy.
