Kilkenny Rose reveals her hopes for the year ahead

Kilkenny Rose, Helena Hughes

Kilkenny Rose Helena Hughes took some time out of her busy schedule juggling work with study and Rose duties to share her hopes for the year ahead.
“I hope that 2019 is going to be full of adventure, and I’m feeling quietly optimistic that the projects I’ve been working on in 2018 will really flourish this year.
“Between my role as the Kilkenny Rose (which I’m still awestruck by), and completing a masters part-time, sometimes I feel like Ronan Keating’s words are true – ‘Life is a rollercoaster, just got to ride it’,” she said.
Helena, who is based in Dublin, has used the New Year as an opportunity to make some resolutions.
“It may sound clichéd, but I find it useful and I am determined to keep them. I’m also ensuring these are achievable goals. I’ve been thinking hard about what I want, where I’m going, and the kind of life I want to have.
Now, they say don’t run before you can walk and we all have to take things one step at a time. Because what happens when you try to take two steps at once? Well, I had to try it out to be sure, but you fall over,” she added.
New Year’s resolutions
Spend ten minutes a day writing.
One might consider ten minutes of writing a day pretty insignificant, but it all adds up. Over 60 hours thereabouts, if I can keep this up all year. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful French lecturer during my undergraduate degree, an amazing and accomplished academic, and the secret to her success was this trick. Some days, she explained, she would write more, but every day she was disciplined enough to complete at least the bare minimum. As I still have my thesis to write, if I can mirror her resolve, I will be a great deal closer to the finish line!
Take a walk
I love the outdoors, and much like our black Labrador at home, I get fairly restless if I don’t get out and about. I’m a big believer in knowing what’s good for you, and fresh air and long strolls do it for me. I’m not the most active person in the world – I’m allergic to the gym, for example – but I think if I can get out for a walk every day I will be happier and healthier inside and out.
Find the 2019 Kilkenny Rose
New year, new Kilkenny Rose! I am really excited for another young woman to become part of an experience that has changed my life for the better. Making new friends with incredible young people across the globe, enjoying opportunities I had previously only dreamed of, and being inspired to do more, it has been a game-changer for me in so many aspects of my life.
It has been an honour and a privilege to represent Kilkenny, a place I am so proud to come from. I cannot wait to meet the Kilkenny Rose candidates of 2019 and support our future Rose on her own adventure!
