Should election posters be scrapped in Kilkenny City?

Cllr Maria Dollard

Local Green Party representative, Cllr Maria Dollard has called for Kilkenny City to be a 'poster free zone' for the duration of the Local Election campaign.

The motion, raised at March's sitting of the Kilkenny Municipal District claimed such a move would be in the interest of the local environment and 'in solidarity' with numerous local organisations who are seeking a cleaner environment and success in the National Tidy Towns Competition.

According to Cllr Dollard, it would be a 'nice gesture' to avoid putting up posters in areas that are being adjudicated in the Tidy Towns event.

Despite being widely accepted in principle by city councillors, the proposal did provide some concern.

Cllr David Fitzgerald claimed there is a 'role' for posters to provide information for members of the public who aren't 'obsessed' with politics, while Cllr John Coonan suggested creating a designated area in the city where posters could be erected.
