BREAKING: It's all over in Castlecomer LEA - Sinn Fein's Denis Hynes has lost his seat as last candidate is elected

Disappointment for Sinn Fein, elation for Fianna Fail and Independent

Kilkenny

The Castlecomer Local Electoral Area

Sitting Sinn Fein councillor Denis Hynes has lost his seat in the Castlecomer LEA tonight, suffering a disappointing defeat in the race for the final seat.

His loss was Michael Delaney's (FF) gain, winning the last seat on transfers. Sinn Fein now looks set to only have one representative on Kilkenny County Counicl - Stephanie Doheny in Callan-Thomastown.

Independent candidate Maurice Shortall was also elected on the fifth count. He is the second independent to be elected to Kilkenny County Council. It always looked likely from the tallies from the moment the North Kilkenny boxes were opened.

The results mean that all the area's seats are now filled:

Pat Fitzpatrick (FF)

Mary Hilda Cavanagh (FG)

Michael McCarthy (FF)

John Brennan (FG)

Maurice Shortall (Ind)

Michael Delaney (FF)
