Speculation is rife that Kilkenny TD Malcolm Noonan could be in the frame to be the new leader or deputy leader of the Green Party, with the resignation of Eamon Ryan at lunchtime today.
He announced he is stepping down from the role following a meeting of the Cabinet. He will remain in his role as Minister for Transport, Climate, Environment and Communications as the party decides on a new leader.
Catherine Martin is reportedly among the front-runners to replace him; she lost out in a leadership contest in recent years, and is currently deputy leader. However, local man Noonan would also be strong contender given his track record. First elected to Kilkenny Borough Council in 2004, he is the party's longest-serving elected representative.
He was elected to the Dail in 2020, and was promoted to the office of Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform. He is popular within his party and also highly-regarded in wider circles in the Dail. He has achieved a number of legislative successes in terms of the Green agenda, and secured funding boosts for areas like biodiversity and nature, as well as built heritage.
The resignation of Eamon Ryan comes after a difficult Local and European Elections for the party, losing both European seats and almost half of council seats. The party now will elect a local leader. Mr Ryan will continue in his role until a new leader is appointed. He will finish out the remainder of the current Government's term, but will not contest the next General Election.
