Party colleagues of Fine Gael councillor David Fitzgerald have unanimously expressed their support for the local man's General Election bid.

The Kilkenny City councillor was first elected to the council in 2009 and confirmed his intention to contest the next General Election last September.

"My strength is to turn the talk into reality. I believe politics is about delivery not speeches and actually making a difference in people’s lives through legislation," Cllr Fitzgerald told Kilkenny Live.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by the party locally with elected representatives, members and party supporters from across the county gathering at a city hotel to lend their backing to Mr Fitzgerald at a function last Wednesday evening.

Ireland’s longest serving female local representative, Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh and her fellow North Kilkenny councillor, John Brennan spoke of Cllr Fitzgerald’s experience and his impressive track record in local government.

Together with a number of former party councillors, they stressed the importance of electing a Kilkenny based Fine Gael TD.

Cllr FitzGerald thanked all present for their support and he pledged to 'leave no stone unturned' in his quest to secure a Dáil seat for the party.
