Gardaí in Kilkenny have taken to social media to remind local people of the importance of keeping vehicles in roadworthy condition, regardless of NCT waiting lists.
"A lot of news at the moment regarding NCT waiting lists," a garda spokesperson stated.
"One issue needs to be highlighted is that regardless of NCT status or waiting lists, every mechanically propelled vehicle must be in a roadworthy condition when used in a public place.
"Tyres, lights, steering, suspension and safety systems must be functioning properly. The offence for using a mechanically propelled vehicle that is dangerously defective in a public place is dangerous driving."
Gardaí added that a licence suspension is the likely result.
"It is imperative that motorists ensure that their vehicle is roadworthy. 'I couldn't get a test' is never a defence for a defective vehicle."
