Earlier today, Minister Heather Humphreys announced funding of €361,156 for repairs and improvement works on rural roads and laneways in Kilkenny.
The funding, under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS), is designed to support the continued improvement of non-public roads and lanes that are not normally maintained by the local authorities.
Local authorities are responsible for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works under the scheme, in consultation with residents/landowners.
Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick (FF), welcomed the announcement, but he insists that more funding is needed.
"Some laneways in Kilkenny have been on the priority list for improvement for years but the list has become so long that it has become impossible to clear the backlog," he said.
"We urgently need more funding to alleviate the backlog as it is holding up infrastructural development in many areas of rural Kilkenny."
The funding provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development is set to be complemented by a local financial contribution from landowners/householders, as well as local authority resources.
