Milestone: 10,000 Kilkenny homes and businesses have access to SIRO’s fibre broadband

Roll out of SIRO fibre broadband

Since SIRO was established in 2015, the open-access broadband wholesaler has gone onto establish an alternative telecoms infrastructure in Ireland

Ten thousand homes and businesses in Kilkenny alone now have access to SIRO’s fibre broadband network – a significant milestone for the Gigabit broadband operator’s roll-out programme.

SIRO, the full fibre network broadband operator, today announced it has passed its 500,000th premise with its full fibre broadband network as part of the open access broadband wholesaler’s billion-euro network rollout.

Since SIRO was established in 2015, the open-access broadband wholesaler has gone onto establish an alternative telecoms infrastructure in Ireland as part of a billion-euro investment programme. The full fibre network broadband operator now has over 20 retailers such as Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky offering its services to half a million homes and businesses across the country.

SIRO’s unique infrastructure, which leverages the ESB electricity network, means that it has no legacy copper network at any point on its system, enabling the company to offer a 100% fibre optic Fibre-to-the-Building service – recognised as the gold standard for broadband connectivity globally. This has enabled SIRO to become the first broadband operator to make speeds of 2 Gigabits available to residential customers and the first to fully upgrade its network to allow for future speeds of up to 25 Gigabits in the years to come.

“Since our early days as a start-up broadband operator, with big ambition and challenges rolling out a new broadband network, our purpose has always been to reach into communities across Ireland and give them access to standard of connectivity as good as anywhere else in the world," said SIRO CEO John Keaney.

“As we reach 500,0000 premises passed with SIRO’s full fibre network, reaching 10,000 homes and businesses in Kilkenny alone, it is satisfying to see that purpose being realised. Homes and businesses across the county accessing our network are living and working in new and more sustainable ways.

“Working from home, staying connected with family and friends or starting or growing businesses where connectivity and digital technologies are becoming the backbone of their operations are all now seamless for customers on our network.

“For SIRO, today is a significant milestone. However, there are still, many towns, communities, homes and businesses across the rest of the country where outdated copper broadband continues to hold them back. SIRO remains focused on the work still left to do – to continue our rollout to ensure more homes and businesses can access our network,” added Mr. Keaney.

SIRO is an open-access wholesaler, reselling its network to over twenty retailers who then provider consumers and businesses with a range of broadband packages and offers. SIRO’s retailers include Virgin Media, Vodafone, Sky, Digiweb, Pure Telecom, Viatel and Blacknight amongst others.

With half a million premises now able to access SIRO’s broadband network, it means that almost 1.4 million individuals in communities across Ireland can access one of Europe’s most advanced broadband networks.
