Plans lodged for new electrical infrastructure project in Kilkenny

The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) have lodged plans for new electricity infrastructure in Kilkenny.

The project, the installation of a new 20kV electricity underground cable, is to pass under the River Barrow across the county boundaries of Kilkenny and Wexford.

The installation is planned to be conducted by horizontal directional drilling under the River Barrow to connect the Lake Region circuit at Marshmeadows, County Wexford to the Beechgrove circuit at Raheen, Rosbercon, County Kilkenny.

From end to end the underground cable will approximately 580m. The majority of the circuit, approximately 365m, will be installed by under the River Barrow.

The remainder of the circuit, approximately 215m, will be installed by traditional trenching and ducting means.

Permission is also sought for all associated works.

A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) has been prepared and will be submitted to the planning authority with the application.

The fate of the planning application is due to be decided by August 3, 2023.
