A rare and historically significant fishing licence issued by King Henry VIII was sold for an impressive €3,200 at Sheppard's Auction House last week.

The document, dating back to 1543, pertains to fishing rights on the River Nore's tidal waters below Inistioge, and its sale has captured the attention of history enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The privilege was granted to David Fitzgerald, also known as Baron, Bishop of Ossory, and the Baron of Brownesford.

According to the decree, no one was permitted to fish the salt waters at Inistioge without the explicit consent of the Bishop and Baron.

The document's historical significance, coupled with its association with King Henry VIII, undoubtedly contributed to its substantial final bid of €3,200.
