Mission accomplished for Kilkenny climbers

Members of Erin's Own GAA club completed a climb of Croagh Patrick last weekend

Mission accomplished for Kilkenny climbers

It was mission accomplished for the members of Erin's Own GAA club as they completed their Croagh Patrick climb on Saturday.

The climb was a big success with all walkers descending from Croagh Patrick safe and sound on Saturday. They say it has become easier with work to the track and some steps, but it’s still a hard slog to the top and a careful and slow journey down.

Thanks to all who supported the climbers through sponsorship. Spearheaded by the Erin's Own trio of Fergal O'Neill, Donall Dunne, and Michael Owens the event has been supported magnificently by the whole community. So far over €23,000 has been raised for essential repairs to the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

"Why did you do it? Is it far more? I am doing it in memory of my mother. I’m doing it for a friend who died of cancer. What time did you start? Did you come last night? Should have gone to bed earlier. Thank God for the second sausage. We’re lucky: we have a nurse, a priest, and an undertaker. And so, we reach the top. In the footsteps of generations before us. Well done to all who climbed and donated. All downhill from here," Parish Priest, Fr Richard Scriven said.

Since 2011 Erin's Own have kept the annual tradition of hiking up Croagh Patrick, raising over €250,000 to date for various local causes, The heavy rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the group of 83 climbers which included young people in their teens all the way to seasoned club members in their 80s. No date has been finalised for the handover of the proceeds so there remains a window of opportunity should anyone wish to contribute either through the go fund me page or to any of the organising committee.
