Default speed limits on rural roads in Kilkenny will be reduced soon from 80km/hr to 60km/hr as part of the ongoing nationwide speed limit review process.
The new speed limits on rural roads in Kilkenny are expected to come into force in late November or possibly early December.
Elected officials were informed at Monday’s plenary meeting of Kilkenny County Council that the local authority has approximately 1,500 new speed signs and 850 new sign poles ready to be installed.

Cllr Tomás Breathnach asked if redundant sign poles could be repurposed and Cllr Pat Dunphy raised some of his own concerns over the scale of the installation, stating that ‘it may need to be put out to contract’.
Cllr Seán Ó hArgáin requested an update from Kilkenny County Council on when urban speed limits of 50km/hr will be reduced to 30km/hr.
"Many were of the view that the 30km/hr speed limit for urban areas was coming in with the 60km/hr [speed limit] in rural areas," he said.
Council officials confirmed that new speed limits in urban areas will be introduced in the next cycle of changes.
