OTD: New Kilkenny factory will be a world beater

An application for outline planning permission for a proposed new meal and bone factory at their existing premises from Clover Meats, which came before Kilkenny County Council, was adjourned.

Mr MA Barry, Chief Engineer, said conditions would basically satisfy the Council that no environmental trouble would arise and that they were to use a plan which was used extensively in Germany.

Having covered the technical aspects relating to the processing they saw in the factories visited in Germany they felt that if this plant was properly operated no problem should arise in the proposed Waterford factory on the basis of a plant similar to the Germany plants.

“This factory in Waterford,” Mr Barry said, “will be a showpiece in as much as it will have every possible item of equipment considered necessary to deal with the environmental problems that might arise from processing.”

Personality of Year
A former coalminer is Castlecomer’s first ever Person of the Year. Jack Kavanagh, Maryville, was the popular choice after a public vote. He won the award from four candidates - Nicholas Downey, Michael Brennan (Cloney) and Martin Dowling.
He was guest of honour at the Castlecomer Development Association’s dinner dance at the Springhill Hotel.

Mr Kavanagh was presented with his prize by Joe McGough, managing director of Bord Bainne, who is originally from Castlecomer. The award is a bird mounted on a hardwood base. The wings are the symbol of progress - of the swinging progress, ‘with-it-age’. But there is a deeper significance. What was the equipment of the miner of he past?

His lamp - and the ‘bird’ - which detected gas before the miner. The bird is no longer confined - it is free - to spread its wings and seek further horizons - this soaring, wing spread bird epitomises all that the Personality of the Year represents.

Mr Kavanagh was a miner up to 1967, when an illness cut short his working life. Long before that he had been active in many organisations in the area and was a member of the Castlecomer Development Association. Today he is still active and as popular as ever.

Birmingham Bombings
Following the bombings in Birmingham, a telegram was sent to the mayor of the city by Mayor Thomas Martin of Kilkenny.
It read: “Strongest condemnation of this barbaric act. Deepest sympathy to all bereaved families”.
